How to Choose the Perfect Family Countryside Break

Family holidays have changed.

While days out, attractions and busy itineraries can be wonderful, many families are now looking for something a little different — a chance to spend time together, enjoy the outdoors and escape the usual routines.

But choosing the right countryside break for a family is not always easy.

A place that looks beautiful in photographs still needs to work for everyone travelling.

Parents want somewhere they can relax.

Children need space to explore.

Teenagers need enough to keep them interested.

And if the dog is coming too, they need to be included in the plans.

The best family countryside breaks are the ones that balance all of these things.

Think About What Everyone Will Enjoy

A successful family holiday does not mean everyone has to do the same thing all day.

Often, the best stays are the ones where everyone has choices.

Parents might want a quiet morning coffee, time in the hot tub or a relaxing sauna session.

Children might want space to play, explore outdoors or try something new.

Teenagers may appreciate somewhere they can enjoy themselves without feeling like the holiday is centred around younger children.

When choosing accommodation, look for somewhere that allows everyone to enjoy the break in their own way.

Look for Space to Explore Safely

One of the biggest benefits of a countryside holiday is having room to breathe.

Outdoor space gives children the freedom to enjoy being outside, whether that is playing games, exploring or simply having somewhere different to spend time.

It is worth considering:

  • Is there safe outdoor space?
  • Can children enjoy being outside independently?
  • Is there somewhere to play if they need a break from screens?
  • Is there space for the whole family to relax together?

For many families, these simple things create the best memories.

Choose a Place With Activities for All Ages

The best family breaks offer options.

Not every day needs to be planned, but having activities available makes a huge difference — especially when staying somewhere for several nights.

Think about what would work for your family:

  • Outdoor games
  • Cycling
  • Tennis
  • A games room
  • Exploring local walks
  • Outdoor cooking
  • Cosy evenings together

Having things to enjoy close by means you can adapt your plans depending on the weather, mood and energy levels.

Consider What Happens When It Rains

The British weather is part of every family holiday!

A countryside break should still work when the sun is not shining.

Before booking, consider whether there are things to enjoy indoors or under cover.

A rainy afternoon does not have to mean everyone sitting on their phones.

The right accommodation gives families opportunities to spend time together whatever the weather brings.

Can You Enjoy the Countryside Without Driving Everywhere?

One of the lovely things about a countryside holiday is exploring the local area.

But it is worth thinking about how much driving you want to do once you arrive.

Some families love heading out every day to discover new places.

Others prefer arriving, parking up and enjoying a slower pace.

Having things nearby can make a family break feel much easier.

A village shop for essentials.

A pub for an evening meal or drink.

Walking routes straight from your accommodation.

Small details can make a big difference.

Don’t Forget the Dog

For many families, the dog is part of the family holiday.

A truly dog-friendly stay should make things easier, not more complicated.

Look for:

  • Secure outdoor spaces
  • Safe walking routes
  • Places where dogs can explore
  • Accommodation where dogs are genuinely welcomed

A countryside location is naturally appealing for dogs, but the right facilities help everyone enjoy the experience.

Why We Created Our Family-Friendly Retreat

When we created our countryside retreat on the Essex–Suffolk border, we wanted it to be somewhere families could enjoy spending time together.

Not every family wants the same type of holiday, so we focused on creating a place where guests have choices.

Children can enjoy outdoor space, the games room, tennis, bikes and activities around the grounds.

Parents can relax with private hot tubs, sauna sessions and peaceful countryside surroundings.

Families can explore the local area, walk from the retreat into the village via a traffic-free footpath, visit the community shop or enjoy the village pub’s beer garden.

And for families bringing their dogs, there are secure gardens, countryside walks and a dedicated dog exercise field to make sure four-legged family members enjoy their stay too.

Finding the Right Family Countryside Break for You

The perfect family holiday is not necessarily the one with the most activities or the busiest schedule.

It is the one where everyone finds something they enjoy.

A place where children can have fun, parents can relax, dogs are welcome and everyone can spend quality time together away from everyday routines.

When choosing your next family countryside break, think about what will make your family happiest.

Because the best memories are often made in the simplest moments.
