Our journey to creating Toppesfield Hall didn’t start with a business plan — it started with a home, a big life change, and a simple question: what next?

Before we created our countryside retreat, I ran a children’s nursery from a space attached to our home. During Covid, I made the difficult decision to close it. Like many people at that time, it was a period of reflection and change, and suddenly we were left with space and time to think differently about the future.

At first, we considered creating a simple holiday let — something small and straightforward. But the more we talked about it, the more we realised it wasn’t really about filling a space. It was about creating something that felt meaningful — a place where people could step away from busy everyday life and enjoy the peace of the countryside.

That’s when the idea of Toppesfield Hall really began to take shape.

Myself and Adam live here with our two children, Amelie and Sidney, four dogs, two cats and a tortoise, so life here has always been full of family, animals, fresh air, and plenty of time outdoors. We wanted to build something that reflected the way we live — relaxed, grounded, and connected to nature.

The main house at Toppesfield Hall dates back to the 1700s, and when we arrived it already had a beautiful history behind it. We carefully renovated and restored the hall, bringing it back to life while respecting its character and heritage.

The cottage on the land became our starting point for guests. We moved here in March 2021, and by July that same year, we had renovated it and opened our first holiday accommodation. It was a very special moment for us — welcoming our first guests to what would become our countryside retreat.

From there, the vision naturally grew.

A huge amount of what you see on site has been created by Adam and his team at Westross Plumbing & Heating Engineers Ltd, from landscaping and groundwork through to the construction of the lodges.

Together, we developed the woodland into a collection of luxury lodges, each one carefully designed and built to sit within the landscape and feel private and peaceful. The idea was always to create spaces where guests could properly slow down — whether that’s a romantic break, a family holiday, or a few quiet days away in the countryside.

Being dog owners ourselves, it was important that the lodges were dog friendly with secure gardens, so guests could bring every member of the family along without worry.

To add an extra touch of relaxation, we also introduced in-lodge treatments, so guests can enjoy massages and therapies in the privacy of their own space — the kind of small moments of calm that often stay with people the most.

Over time, each space has taken on its own character, but they all share the same feeling — a sense of calm, space, and countryside simplicity.

What started as a home, and a period of change, has grown into something we’re incredibly proud of — a place where people come to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the countryside at its simplest.
